Katri Niemi: Hämärän hyssy

Galleria Topelius / Exhibitions
26.8.–14.9.2025

Hämärän hyssy is an art exhibition using mixed media on birch plywood. Works that depict moments of transition, when light fades and silence begins to speak.

Hämärän hyssy is a transition – a moment between day and night, when the world slows down and the light changes. It is both an external and internal landscape, where the imagination awakens, boundaries blur, and silence speaks.

In this exhibition, I explore twilight not only as a natural phenomenon, but also as an emotional state. My works are born from moments when the world is no longer light but not yet dark, when everything feels softer and memory, dreams, and reality begin to intertwine. In my art, human figures, animals, and plants intertwine as if by the logic of dreams, forming a new, alternative reality in which twilight is not only a lack of light but also a space for wonder and imagination.

In my works, I use a mixed technique on birch plywood. This gives the surface an organic touch, a multitude of layers, and a sense of randomness. The roughness and natural warmth of the material support the theme of twilight, those moments when not everything is fully visible but can still be sensed.

Hämärän hyssy can be a window in a home, behind which evening descends. It can be a forest where the path disappears into the shadows. Or a landscape of the mind, where words fade and emotions deepen.

I hope that the exhibition offers the viewer space to stop, linger, and breathe. Perhaps even to return to their own twilight, to those moments when everything is still possible, but nothing requires haste.
