In Aleksi Martikainen’s Luonnos maisemasta – Landscape study, we observe a landscape moving and shifting around the still horizon. Martikainen’s works are often inspired by nature and a longing to recreate moments of tranquillity found within it.

In seeking out this sense of calm, Martikainen focuses deliberately on making the movements of his kinetic sculptures subtle. For Martikainen, in this pursuit of technical precision, some of the lightness can fade from his creative process. The result holds both tension and stillness.

Aleksi Martikainen is a visual artist based in Helsinki and working in Pukkila, with a practice spanning sculpture and moving image. For the exhibition, Martikainen received support from Arts Promotion Centre Finland.
