Fragments and Impressions is an exhibition by three sculptors from different parts of Eastern Finland, presented across all four exhibition spaces of Art Centre Ahjo in September 2026. As the title suggests, the works in the exhibition are small details drawn from our thinking and artistic practice over the years. For a moment, these fragments condense into—and simultaneously expand into—larger wholes and installations within the exhibition space.
The starting points for our works are found in questions related to natural environments, natural phenomena, other-than-human life, and ecology. Other central themes of the exhibition include empathy, memory and remembering, as well as death and transience.
We have all worked professionally as artists for many years and know our tools and materials well.
Different materials, the exploration of their properties, and the process of working with them are also central to the works in the exhibition. The materials include wood, ceramics, and metals. Alongside traditional sculptural materials, the works also incorporate multisensory and even immaterial elements: light, movement, and sound.
In addition to our artworks, we want to bring attention to sculpture as a social tradition and include an interactive, participatory element in the exhibition. As part of the exhibition, visitors will have the opportunity to carve wood together with the artists on 8 September and 27 September, from 11 am to 4 pm. Materials and tools will be provided on site.
