Maija Albrecht: Maija Albrecht - Prints

It is said that the devil is in the details. But so is beauty. Nature’s immensity multiplicity consist of the details and their mutual relationships. Every feeble line, the nuance of every grey tone are small particularities that in the end constitute the whole: the picture. I try to remember this when I draw, painstakingly slowly. Most of my life as an artist I have spent at the copper plate with the dry point needle in my hand. Quietly and deeply focused I have tried to use these precise details to make pictures.

The prerequisite for all learning is careful observation. It’s a matter of listening carefully and observing thoroughly. A hidden meaning can lie concealed in everything. The details of a beetle might hide a message; the chirp of a tit or a goldcrest can be secret communication.

The freedom of imagination is essential for both science and art. Yet, we can never comprehend unorganised chaos. Deep understanding requires that observations be structured, that connections be recognised and underlying patterns be understood. Only if we are sensitive enough to truly open our eyes and ears can we grasp the deeper connections in nature and within ourselves.

The hungry eye asks questions. Yet the answers remain elusive and secretive.

Maija Albrecht is a printmaker, born in Turku in 1967. She lives and works in Ingå. Albrecht’s primary medium of expression is drypoint. She began her art studies at the Kankaanpää Art School and obtained her Master’s degree in fine arts from the Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki, in 1998. Maija Albrecht has been exhibiting since 1991, and her works are found in many art collections both in Finland and abroad.

The artist has received support from Taike, The Amos Anderson Fund and The Swedish Cultural Foundation in Finland.
