Rita Vargas: Notes from the Margins
La Matière du Silence"/"Da Matéria do Silêncio à Cor da Saudade
Rita Vargas is a visual artist and art historian who works in sculpture, installation, graphic art and
photography. Her work explores migration and diasporic identity through material metaphors and lay
ered images. Drawing on classical iconography, she combines woodcuts, photographic fragments,
ceramics and cork to construct symbolic spaces where personal and collective histories meet.
Originally from Portugal, shaped by Japanese influences and inspired by years spent in Finland,
Vargas creates works that embrace theatricality and fragmentation as forms of resilience and
transformation.
