Project Babel

Project Babel is an international project that brings together printmakers from forty workshops and nineteen countries. In the community project, Pieter Bruegel the Elder’s painting “The Tower of Babel” from 1563, which was divided into parts, will be reassembled by the printmakers. The part drawn to each artist is 13 x 17 cm in size, and the size of the assembled image is approximately 230 x 320 cm.

The goals of Project Babel are to bring together printmakers from all over the world and build new connections between the studios. The collaboration enables the creation of a joined artwork using the best methods and styles of printmaking. The process is interesting in its unpredictability; the result is only created when the piece is assembled, and it differs from the original image in many ways.

The project is led by Team Babel, a personal group of four printmakers: Anni Huttu, Naoji Ishiyama, Kaisa Koljonen and Maria Pihl. They work as freelance artists in the printmaking studio Ratamo in Finland and created this project to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Ratamo Printmaking and Photography Center.

The exhibition is part of the international printmaking symposium organized by the South Karelia Artists' Association.
