The exhibition features a vibrant collection of 15 pieces, created primarily with oils and acrylics. The paintings showcase detailed brushwork, psychedelic hues, and beautiful moments captured on canvas. Songs From The Sun is a follow-up to the album of the same name released in June.
Each painting is paired with a specifically composed song. The visual art is accompanied by the album playing in the background. "The paintings and music complement each other as the same inspiration is channeled through two different art forms," says Anna Soppela, visual artist and singer of Kai Kuu.
The theme of the exhibition is light and its associated symbolism, aiming to highlight the joy, beauty, and mystery of life. The works explore both the spiritual and physical essence of light.
"The colors of the rainbow, the stars and the moon, a summer night, and the Khom Loy sky. Light can be found in the night sea or in the depths of one’s soul. It can be just a small reflection in the dark or the bright morning sun that – as if jealous of your sleep – dazzles you awake. It can be a smile or peace of mind; all of these things can be metaphorically described in music, poetry, and visual art using light," Kai Kuu's composer and multi-instrumentalist Paavo Palosaari describes.
As Oulu celebrates its year as the European Capital of Culture, this independent exhibition serves as a great opportunity for locals and visitors to experience the paintings live.
The full album is available on all major streaming services. Each song has also been released as a single, allowing the individual cover art to be seen across all platforms.
Kai Kuu creates music and visual art. The duo’s atmospheric, genre-bending soundscape is a blend of psychedelic soul-jazz fusion and dreamy, mystical tones. Hand-painted cover art brings a touch of magical realism into the mix. These unique paintings serve as physical and symbolic illustrations for the stories behind the songs. Rooted in the Northern landscapes of Lapland, the duo currently lives and produces their art in Oulu.
