Maria Koolen Hellmin, Johanna Byström Sims: The McGurk Effect

Maria Koolen Hellmin and Johanna Byström Sims are holding an artistic dialogue around a shared interest in science, space, transparency, musical form and language, which has lead to the finding of a common basis in the intersection of the material and the immaterial.

The title The McGurk Effect refers to a perceptual phenomenon that ships an interaction between hearing and vision that occurs when the auditory component of a sound is paired with the visual component of another sound, generating an entirely new sensory experience.

Maria Koolen Hellmin is a Stockholm-based sculptor, educated at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts. Her practice spans sculpture and site-specific installation, integrating photography, moving image, light, sound and digital systems as material methods that shape perception and spatial experience.

Johanna Byström Sims received her MFA from School of Visual Arts in New York. She lives and works in Sweden, but is also involved in international projects, most recently in Seoul and London. For the last twenty years her art has been shown in many different contexts including museums and kunsthalles, as well as farm fields and iron works.
