Olga Sophie Kauppinen: Second Hand

Galleriaia / Exhibitions
4.–27.9.2026

Second Hand is the second installation based exhibition by Olga Sophie Kauppinen. She creates a space that feels familiar but remains slightly out of reach, drawing on the visual language of a second-hand store while allowing objects to slip between different states. The tongue-in-cheek name is also a reference to the use of an ambidextrous painting method, employing the use of the ‘second hand’, also allowing a sense of looseness and surprise in mark making. Garments, paintings, and constructed forms occupy the same environment. The work is interested in subtle shifts, where something recognizable becomes unfamiliar and its identity is no longer fixed, playing with concepts of field and dimensionality, while staying true to the purpose of art by abandoning functionality.

The work extends through oil painting, relief, sculpture, sound, and installation, creating dimensional overlap. Ideas associated with quantum physics provide a loose framework for thinking about this instability: an object need not occupy only one state, or timeline, creating a tension which is also present in everyday moments.
